Slot Machines

Slot Machines go by a number of different names. Some of these names include; a slot machine (American English), a fruit machine (British English), the slots (Canadian and American English), a poker machine or also known pokies  (Australian English and New Zealand English) or simply slot (American English)

Slot Machines are casino gambling machines with three or more reels which spin when a button is pushed or a lever (the original inception of slot machines) is pulled. Today, most all slot machines have eliminated the lever and have switched to button operated machines. Slot machines are also known commonly known as one-armed bandits because they were originally operated by a lever on the side of the machine and because of their ability to leave the gamer broke, which explains the term “bandit” included in the phrase “one-armed bandits).

Slot machines include a currency detector that validates the money inserted to play, usually by direct cash insertion or a casino voucher ticket. The machine pays off based on patterns of symbols visible on the front of the machine when it the spinning wheels stop and the symbols are revealed in their displayed order, which is determined at random. Slot machines are the most popular gambling method in casinos and constitute around 70% of the average casino’s income for those casinos located and/or operating in the United States.

The “slot machine” term derives from the slots on the machine for inserting and retrieving coins and the term “Fruit machine” comes from the traditional fruit images on the spinning reels. Some of these fruits include cherries, lemons, apples and sometimes grapes.

The newer voucher Ticket-In, Ticket-Out machines operate in conjunction with a paper ticket that has a visible barcode and is inserted by a player into a designated slot on the machine. This slot can also be used to collect paper cash. The game is strictly a game of chance and involves little to no strategy at all. Some would say that the only strategy in the game is to know when to walk away, or stop playing, at that particular machine.

The object of most, if not all, slot machine games usually involves matching symbols (either specialized custom symbols or the aforementioned fruit icons, either on mechanical reels that spin and stop to reveal one or several symbols or on simulated reels shown on a video screen (which is becoming more popular in modern times.

These symbols are usually brightly colored and easily recognizable, such as images of fruits, numbers or letters and simple shapes such as bells, diamonds, or hearts and sometimes come with music, voices or any type of sound (cash sound, lightning bolt, bells,  buzzer, etc).

The newer video slot machines typically use animated cartoon characters and also images of popular actors or singers, movies, pop culture or even hired talent such as models and/or spokespeople who are used to “star” in the machine videos.

Most games have a variety of winning combination of symbols, often posted on the face of the machine and if a player matches a combination according to the rules of the game, the slot machine pays the player cash or some other sort of value, such as extra games or points that can lead to additional monetary or other rewards offered by the casino.
